FAQs for Chartering in the Solent
Portsmouth Yacht Charter
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before joining us on the water for your Solent yacht charter.
What happens in bad weather?
Your safety and enjoyment are our highest priorities when operating in the Solent, where conditions can change quickly.
If forecast conditions indicate sustained Force 7 winds or gusting Force 8, we will not be able to leave the dock. This decision is made solely by the Captain after reviewing marine forecasts, tide conditions and local weather systems. The Captain’s decision is final and non-negotiable.
If your charter cannot proceed as planned, you will be offered:
- Dockside hospitality on board with a partial refund
- Rescheduling to an alternative date, subject to availability
- A full refund
How many guests can we bring?
For safety, insurance and licensing compliance, the yacht can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests at any one time.
This limit is strict and cannot be exceeded under any circumstances.
What are the key charter terms we should be aware of?
Our charters follow principles consistent with professional yacht charter standards, including key terms commonly reflected in the MYBA Charter Agreement.
- Captain’s authority: The Captain has full authority over the vessel, itinerary and all safety-related decisions.
- Guest conduct: Guests are expected to behave responsibly and respectfully toward the crew, vessel and other guests.
- Liability for damage: The lead charterer may be responsible for any damage caused by guests beyond normal wear and tear.
- Use of the vessel: The yacht is to be used for leisure purposes only and within the agreed cruising area.
- Timing: Charters begin and end at the agreed times. Late arrival may reduce your time on board without refund.
Can I bring my dog?
While we love animals, we’re unable to accommodate dogs or other pets on board due to safety, hygiene and comfort considerations for all guests.
All “sea dogs”, however, are very welcome.
Is smoking or vaping allowed?
Smoking is strictly prohibited anywhere on the vessel, including cigarettes and cigars.
Vaping may be permitted provided that all guests on board are comfortable with it and the vapour is discreet and non-offensive. The Captain may restrict vaping at any time for safety or guest comfort.
What should we wear?
Comfort and practicality are always recommended for a Solent yacht charter.
- Footwear: All guests must remove their shoes before boarding to protect the yacht. Please wear flat, closed-toe shoes for walking along the marina and pontoons.
- Clothing: The British weather can be unpredictable, so we suggest dressing in layers and bringing a light waterproof or windproof jacket.
- Sun protection: On brighter days, sunglasses, hats and sunscreen are recommended.
Can we bring our own food and drinks?
You are welcome to bring your own champagne, white wine, rosé, beers and soft drinks. Please ensure all drinks are pre-chilled and brought in cool bags.
We provide glassware, ice and garnishes ready for your arrival.
Guests are not permitted to bring their own food on board. We offer a range of high-quality hot and cold catering options to suit most requirements. Please let us know of any dietary requirements in advance.
Are there any restrictions on alcohol consumption?
Guests are welcome to enjoy alcohol responsibly. However, the Captain reserves the right to limit or refuse alcohol consumption if safety may be compromised.
Excessive intoxication that affects the safety or enjoyment of others will not be permitted.
What time should we arrive?
We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time to allow for boarding and a safety briefing.
Late arrival may shorten your time on board and will not extend the charter period.
Are children allowed on board?
Yes, children are welcome on board, but they must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
Suitable life jackets can be provided for children upon request.
Are tips expected?
Gratuities are entirely at your discretion and are never expected.
If you feel the crew has delivered an exceptional experience, tips are always appreciated as a gesture of thanks.
